During September and October Susan and I embarked on a tour of several midwestern and western states, driving in our 2000 Toyota Siena van(215,000 miles before our trip)a total of 7,279 miles through 13 states. We were gone 33 days and spent the night in 21 different places. When we got home it dawned on us that we had been together virtually 24/7 for the entire trip with no major disagreements and without growing tired of each other. I think our marriage of 41 years will last.

Sunday October 16 and Monday October 17: From Texas to Florida—the End of the Journey

We had a totally uneventful drive from Katy through Houston, east Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, finally stopping for the night in Pensacola FL.  I think our sightseeing eyes were just about worn out, so we didn’t stop anywhere along the way except for food, gas, and necessities.

Before we left Pensacola, Susan mentioned that although she had grown up in Florida, she had never been to the beaches in the Panhandle.  We decided to take the “beach route” home and drove along the Gulf Coast, making several stops to admire the white sand and the blue-green Gulf of Mexico waters.  We had a leisurely lunch in Port St. Joe, and at some point left the Gulf coast and headed across central Florida toward home.  After stopping for dinner in Ocala, we made it home around 9:30 p.m., meaning we had taken 11 hours to drive from Pensacola to Port Orange.  Interstates 10 and 95 would have been faster, but we wouldn’t have enjoyed it quite as much.

It took a few days to  put Road Trip 2011 behind and adjust to the routines of daily life, but we’ll have these great memories for years to come.
